The RIM BlackBerry Torch combines a touch screen and full QWERTY keyboard. BlackBerry OS 6 led to improvements such as better user interfaces, universal search, and improved browser and multimedia experience.
Disadvantages: the smartphone can be slow. Torch has a higher resolution screen rendah.Aplikasi can be saved only for the phone's main memory. VGA video camera.
The bottom line: Though the performance could be better and could stand up to some hardware upgrades, BlackBerry 9800 RIM BlackBerry OS Torch and 6 offers better improvement.
We have been adjusting ratings from the beginning we publish date to reflect the new devices that have entered the market.
Although the BlackBerry continues to be very popular, it's no secret that RIM needed to improve the world market and really work to improve and advance the operating system. Over the last few months, the company has given us a preview of the new OS, but now, we finally had a chance to test it.
Slider phone - a first for RIM - unify the touch screen and physical keyboard into the design .. New OS brings some much-needed additions, including better browser, multimedia-enhanced, and improved user interface .. It's just unfortunate that RIM does not upgrade other parts of the phone, like display and processor.
Design
This company's first slider phone and is not intended to be a one-time design, but the beginning of a new series. RIM and AT & T actually started working on the Blackberry about one and a half years ago, and while making the phone has the objective to offer a design that not only combines the best from around the world - a touch screen, full keyboard and track pad - but also something which is familiar to BlackBerry users before and during ini.Untuk most part, we think RIM's managed to do it.
Torch is a somewhat resemble the shape BlackBerry Storm but smaller. In the closed state, the Torch measures 4.4 inches high by 2.4 inches wide 0.6 inches thick and weighs 5.7 ounces. This is a rather large and powerful handset, but it feels very solid, finishing with a soft touch textured in the back. It's also thin and short enough to comfortably slip into the pants pocket.
At the front, Torch features 3.2-inch half-VGA (480 × 360 by 188 pixels per inch) capacitive touch screen. Overall, the screen is clear and bright enough to read text and view web pages, photos, and video. However, compared with many smartphones today, such as HTC and Samsung Droid Incredible Captivate, the difference in screen resolution visible and Torch's fallen a bit flat.
The screen has a proximity sensor, so you do not have to worry about the press that deviate during a phone call, and a built-in accelerometer for quickly changing screen orientation when we played phone.
Torch We found the keyboard quite easy to use.
Torch offers portrait and landscape on-screen keyboard, which is suitable if you're writing a text message quickly.
Torch keyboard is actually one of the thinnest BlackBerry. Thus, the keypad is not as good as Bold, but the keys still in the size of the layak.Kami also appreciate that there is distance between rows of buttons and the bottom edge of the screen.
At the bottom of the screen, you will find some parts of the BlackBerry as a standard navigation controls - Talk and End keys, a BlackBerry menu button, back, and optical trackpad below the screen, and key and a mute button on top of the device. Like other BlackBerry devices, pressing the menu button will bring up a task switcher so you can easily switch to recently used applications.
Right spine features a 3.5mm headphone jack, volume rocker, and a customizable convenience key, which is defined as a camera activation / capture button by default. There is a micro-USB port on the left, and the camera and flash are located on the back with a microSD card slot behind the battery door.
AT & T Torch package with AC adapter, USB cable, a 4GB microSD card, stereo headset cable, polishing cloth, and reference materials.
RIM BlackBerry Torch is the first model to run the BlackBerry OS 6, RIM wanted to present something both fresh and familiar.
You will see the home screen. On top, there is the Quick Access area where you can view the date, time, signal strength, battery, and where you can set your wireless connection. Below there is a new notification bar that contains one-touch access to change your phone profiles and to perform a search. It will also alert you to new messages, missed calls, upcoming appointments, and so forth.
Most of the action, however, took place at the bottom of the screen, where you will discover a new navigation bar. It makes good use of the touch screen, as you can swipe from left to right and vice versa to access applications and content based on five categories: All, Favorites, Media, Downloads, and Frequent. Besides swiping aside, you can tap the category to expand it and view a complete list of related applications.
The categories themselves are clear, but we should note that the Favorites are not limited to the application. You can also add contacts and Web sites by going to the individual address book entries or web sites, press the menu button, and then select Add to Home Screen and select Mark as a Favorite (must be checked off by default). Meanwhile, the process to add your favorite applications only require that you do a tap-length and then select Mark as a Favorite from the contextual menu.
Overall, this system does a good job making it easier to access and manage applications, and enhance overall user experience. With contextual menu and improved Web browser and multimedia features (further below), we have a feeling that RIM is really taking advantage of the ability of the touch screen this time, while the Storm model feels a bit half-baked.
However, despite all this, one of our favorite things about the BlackBerry OS 6 comes to simple things like universal search. RIM makes good on the "universal", as the search function scan almost the entire contents of your phone, including contacts, messages, calendar, music, and pictures. In addition, you can extend your search to Google, YouTube, BlackBerry App World, and third-party applications, so you get a very powerful search experience here. It is seldom that we were unable to find what we seek to use the universal search at Torch.
Features
RIM BlackBerry 9800 Torch is the world of quad-band mobile phone featuring 3G support, Bluetooth 2.1, Wi-Fi, and GPS. Other phone features include speakerphone, voice activated dialing, smart dialing, conference calling, speed dial, visual voice mail, and text and multimedia messages. Text and multimedia messages are now merged into a single box and supporting the threaded chat view, inline handling and group chat. You can also directly connect with friends via BlackBerry Messenger and via standard instant messaging clients like Windows Live, Yahoo, Google Talk, and AIM, all loaded on the phone.
Of course, what's a BlackBerry without e-mail? Torch can sync with your company's BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES), with support for Microsoft Exchange, IBM Lotus Domino, or Novell GroupWise, to deliver corporate e-mail in real time. Recently, RIM also released the BlackBerry Enterprise Server Express, a free but limited version of BES, which allows individuals and small businesses to synchronize the Exchange calendar, their contacts, and tasks and access to store files on your corporate network.
With BlackBerry Internet Service, you can also access up to 10 POP3 personal / business or IMAP4 e-mail account, with both separate and joint-box. There is a setup wizard to help you sync your account, and it usually just by typing your log-in IDs and passwords. We are able to sync our Gmail and Yahoo accounts without problems, but have trouble two-way synchronization with Gmail for more than BIS. Although RIM launched this feature this summer, it did not work on our devices. For example, if we read or delete e-mails from Gmail on your PC, this is not reflected on the Torch, so we are constantly cleaning in our smartphone-box, which should be very disturbing.
Currently, e-mail address is not enough. People also want access to their social networks, and Torch BlackBerry to the task. smartphone not only comes preloaded with Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter client, but also Social Feeds new application, which aggregates update from the sites, and instant-messaging client, into one place. You can pick and choose which sites you want to be drawn into the feed, and also adjust the screen settings and notification. In addition, this application also acts as an RSS feed aggregator.
Torch BlackBerry comes preloaded with a number of other applications and games, such as DataViz Documents To Go Standard Edition, a memo book, calculator, BrickBreaker, Word Mole, and Bejeweled. You'll also find AT & T services and applications on the device as well, including AT & T Maps, AT & T Navigator, AT & T Music, Yellow Pages Mobile, and where.
You can download additional applications of the new BlackBerry App 2.0.Toko World offers more than 9,000 applications, which pales in comparison to iTunes and Android Market, but the upside is that the shop now supports billing carrier (AT & T will be the first to offer this) and the new BlackBerry service ID, which tracks your downloads and purchases so that the next time you get a new BlackBerry, you can enter a BlackBerry ID and password and automatically refill your application to new devices.
RIM says most existing applications should work with the BlackBerry OS 6, but initially, there may be some variation in how well all the features of an original application with a new platform. Also, keep in mind that you can save the application only to the phone's main memory (512 MB Flash memory).
Web browsing and multimedia
The result is a combination of simplified processes, such as start page cleaner and easier bookmarking features, and new and better such as tabbed browsing and improved sharing URLs. There is also support for pinch-to-zoom and reflow text, so if you press twice on the page to zoom in, the browser will automatically adjust the text to fit the screen. Another improvement is better HTML and JavaScript rendering, and partial support for HTML5 and CSS3, which may be too much techno jargon to some, but it is important because it increases the speed and performance browser.Sayangnya, no support for Flash and RIM would not comment on whether will be added in the future.
In real world use, we definitely feel the browser is much more functional than previous versions. We really liked the setup tabbed browsing, because it minimizes your current page and bring the thumbnail versions of all your open pages at a point where you can swipe through until you find the page you want. For the most part, text reflow function to work as advertised, but if there are all kinds of tables in-line or graphical, rolling several may be involved, there is also a little redraw delay when you zoom in using the pinch-to-zoom gesture.
We saw a bump in speed, too, but there is still room for improvement, as the BlackBerry browser is not quite as fast as other mobile browsers. Through Wi-Fi connection, the full site Huffington Post was loaded in 50 seconds on the Torch, while the mobile site for CNN, and ESPN came in 7 seconds and 6 seconds. For comparison, the Android browser at One Nexus brought the same site in 15 seconds, 3 seconds and 4 seconds, respectively, and the Safari browser on the iPhone 3G delivered within 35 seconds, 6 seconds, and 5 seconds.
Moving to multimedia features. Much like Android, BlackBerry always provide a multimedia experience that is acceptable, but provides a somewhat sluggish user interface. This all changes with the Torch and the BlackBerry OS 6, because now you get a Cover Flow-like presentation that utilizes the touch screen to navigate through the tracks and playback. Video player also gives you more playback options, ranging from actual size to full screen.
Torch supports MP3, AAC, AAC +, eAAC +, WMA, FLAC, and OGG music files and MPEG4, H.263, H.264, and WMV video codecs. To get the files on your phone, you can use the Torch as a mass storage device and simply drag and drop files. Or, the new BlackBerry Desktop Software 6 can sync media libraries from Windows Media Player or iTunes, and there is also Wi-Fi Music Sync feature that, among other things, will allow you to download songs onto your smartphone on your home Wi-Fi. Torch has 4GB of onboard memory and comes with a 4GB microSD card, though the expansion slot can accept up to 32GB cards.
Goodies Other entertainment includes a dedicated YouTube player, Slacker Radio, MobiTV, and a new podcast application that offers content from catalog podcast QuickPlay.
Torch has a feature 5-megapixel camera with auto focus, 2x zoom, and LED flash. This camera is the highest ever in use RIM's Blackberry, but the company was not about the megapixels. It's about small details such as providing proper equipment to take pictures in the room and capture action shots. As a result, the company added a new camera options such as face detection, an additional scene modes, and a simplified camera interface.
Choice of new camera did a good job taking pictures in different environments, but the indoor shots came out a little soft.
We appreciate all the new camera options, and most of the scene modes do their jobs. To shoot the standard in our room, we switched the event to the Party mode, which is recommended for the "dim, indoor environment," and the arrangement would help in terms of lighting and color performance. But the picture quality somewhat softer. Outdoor shots came out great, and we were able to capture fast-moving subjects using Sports mode. You can check the samples of some of the photos in the photo gallery kami.Apa a disappointing, though, is that the only record VGA video camera, while mobile phones such as HTC and Motorola 4G Evo X Droid now offers HD video recording. That said, the clips recorded on the Torch is quite good.
Performance
We tested the quad-band (GSM 850/900/1800/1900) BlackBerry RIM Torch uses AT & T service and call quality is generally a baik.Di our side, clear audio with minimal background noise. Sometimes, there is little distortion of sound, make the caller sound a bit like a robot, but it did not stop us from continuing our conversation. Meanwhile, our friends reported good results and have no major complaints.
Speakerphone quality could definitely be better. Calls sounded hollow and some friends say they can hear the echo. Also, even at the highest levels, low volume, so it is quite difficult to hold conversations in loud environments. We do not have a problem mate smartphone with a headset Logitech Mobile Traveller Bluetooth or the Motorola S9 Active Bluetooth headphones.
We have pretty good 3G coverage in all of Manhattan, but we have two calls fall in Midtown. Data speeds are decent. If there is one area where the Torch trip up, it umum.Bersenjata performance Marvell 624MHz processor, the smartphone can be slow in most applications kali.Meskipun launched fast enough, we experienced delays when switching between tasks. There were several times they were quite significant that the system we thought it might have been frozen, but eventually come back to life.
Torch Batteries BlackBerry has a rated talk time 5.5 hours (2G) / 5.8 hours (3G) and up to 17 days (2G) / 13 days (3G) of standby time. Smartphones are able to provide 5 hours of continuous talk time on a single charge. By using a moderate (some Web browsing, music and video playback, and e-mail), the smartphone is able to survive a little more than a day before needing to recharge. According to FCC radiation tests, Torch has a SAR rating of 0.91 watts per kilogram and Hearing Aid Compatibility rating M3/T3
